Pituitary MRI examination may be prescribed by a doctor if several diseases are suspected, such as abnormal obesity, infertility, growth failure - suspected short stature -, thyroid disease, and sex hormone disorders. Suspected pituitary tumours and high levels of the hormone prolactin may justify this examination, in which case the possibility of a CT scan may arise. Pituitary MRI can also detect missing or small anterior lobe, and hypothalamic morphological changes. In all cases, medical recommendation and a kidney function test (creatinine and urea), which is not older than one month, are required for an examination with a contrast agent. Before the scan, it is possible to perform a rapid creatinine test on site, from which the eGFR is calculated. The test is performed on a sample taken from a fingertip.
